Abstract

From the representation of the city of Palmelo (GO) as “spiritualist city”, to question what extent the sociological notion the “city” is compatible with the link to a religious cultural identity? The question-problem takes the theoretical par Weberian society / community as a starting point for understanding the concept of city in process complexity and functional differentiation in tension with advances in questioning of Stuart Hall (2006) on cultural identity decentralizes the modern subject – it’s the same subjectpresupposed in the classical theory of the community, generating inferences so also in this last concept. Under this questioning, the specific objective of this work is to take religion theory notes as symbolic form, questioning possible limitations on Weber (2000), Cassirer (1992) and Bourdieu (2009), before conflicting notions of identity and community.
