Abstract
ABSTRACT Plasma and urinary estriol and creatinine levels were determined during normal labor (5 cases) and labor induced by oxytocin infusion (11 cases). During normal labor urine flow varied inconsistently, whereas plasma estriol as well as plasma creatinine levels remained generally constant. The estriol “clearance” and creatinine clearance rates were calculated. Both tended to fluctuate in the same direction and there was a downward trend as labor progressed. During oxytocin-induced labor there was a sharp decline in the urine output in 9 of the 11 cases. The urinary estriol concentrations varied inversely with the urine output. Prompt declines in the estriol “clearance” and creatinine clearance rates were observed in virtually all cases, probably the result of decreased glomerular filtration rate. Certain reservations are expressed concerning the calculation of estriol clearance rates because the profiles of estriol conjugates in the urine and plasma differ.
