Abstract

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of pain in the inferior heel. There is an association between increased plantar heel pain and reduced ankle dorsiflexion. Objective: To determine whether stretching the Achilles tendon for the treatment of plantar fasciitis is effective. Search strategy: We conducted a search in the database PubMed and EMBASE using the following terms as keywords, “plantar fasciitis”, “heel pain”, “ankle dorsiflexion” y “Achilles tendon”, “stretching”. Study selection: 20 documents were retrieved, 16 were excluded by title, and five were selected. Summary of results: stretching exercises of the Achilles tendon produced a small but statistically significant increase in ankle dorsiflexion. However, there is no demonstrated strong evidence on the benefit of exercises of the Achilles tendon stretching for plantar fasciitis. Conclusions: The available evidence is insufficient to recommend this type of intervention.
