Abstract

Infrared radiation induced desorption of adsorbed molecules from cryogenic surfaces can lead to potentially detrimental pressure limitation in cryogenic UHV/XHV systems. For a sub-monolayer coverage, we determined the corresponding yields for hydrogen and helium exposed to room temperature radiation to be in the order of 1·10-4 and 0.02 m2(W·s)-1 respectively. We used these yields to estimate the radiation induced pressure in the PUMA experiment, presently under construction at CERN.
