Abstract

1. The absence of a unified approach to an estimation of the geometric characteristics of soil particles and especially their size is one of the main reasons for the inconsistency of the recommendations contained in the works of different authors. 2. The use of the concept of reduced diameter of soil particles makes it possible to take into account the difference in determination of their size with the use of screens with a different hole shape, to avoid conflicting recommendations, and to increase the accuracy of hydraulic calculations based on an estimate of the roughness of the surface and size of sediments.
