Abstract

After 15 years of age, there are few techniques, which can be used to determine the age of adolescents and young adults. The third molar is the only dental element, which undergoes change. Although this tooth presents major variability, agenesis of the four wisdom remains rare and almost 95% of patients of 18 years of age present at least a third molar. Techniques put forward in literature using this tooth are therefore interesting and in particular the technique advanced by Demirjian et al., published in 1973 and further developed by Mincer, offering an estimation of biological age based on dental development. The objective of this study is to test Demirjian's technique on a non-forensic youth population based in the west, France, to offer a simple calculation method which can be reproduced allowing a transition from dental age to biological age to be made, and to compare our results with those found in literature.
