Abstract

The received signal correlation between different ports of an antenna array can be calculated from the radiation pattern orthogonality. Through the power conservation law, it is possible to estimate the pattern orthogonality coefficient from the scattering parameters for lossless antenna arrays. For lossy antenna arrays, e.g., due to losses in a decoupling network, the scattering parameters are not sufficient to calculate the pattern orthogonality, which in this case is also a matter of the power loss. In this communication, the relationship between loss power and pattern orthogonality is analyzed and a relatively simple estimation procedure for the pattern orthogonality is presented. Two compact monopole arrays with lossy decoupling networks are investigated as examples. Good agreement between the proposed method and simulation results is achieved.
