Abstract
The paper presents an approximate method for the rapid estimation of the side resistance of a compressible pile in a softening geotechnical medium. The method comprises a series of. dimensionless design charts which have been constructed using the Coyle and Reese (1966) analysis. The solution depends on the ability of the unit load transfer curve of the pile shaft to be approximated by three straight lines. Some simple examples are presented to demonstrate the application of the method.
