Abstract

It is demonstrated on the basis of comparison of laboratory determination of the shear resistance of soils frozen against surfaces that a more reliable estimate of freezing forces is possible with separate determination of cohesion and friction. This approach makes it possible to model the performance of deeply embedded piles. Dependencies of the shear resistance of frozen sands and clayey loams in the area of the Pechora Depression on basic physical properties and temperature are presented.
