Abstract

The penetration of renewable energy sources in the world is gradually increasing, and the characteristics of the power system are changing drastically. Recently, power system has faced various problems such as reduction of inertia of system, bi-directional power supply due to micro grid, stability problem of transmission and distribution system. The volatility of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power causes frequency stability problems, which has emerged as a major interest. Using short-term energy storage systems such as BESS and Adjustable Speed Pumped Storage Power Generator has risen as a suitable solution to solve power supply issues caused by renewable energy volatility, and it is evaluated that an adjustable speed pumped storage power generator is an alternative which can be supplied, increasing electrical power systems’ inertia and generator parameters. The study calculated power volatility of new and renewable energy sources in the future power system, and estimated the capacity of adjustable speed pumped storage power generator that is suitable for maintaining frequency within an appropriate range.
