Abstract

A probe in a near-field optical microscope, which can support the TEM mode, is proposed for increasing optical efficiency on the basis of a simplified mathematical model. The model is based on scalar theory and a simplified boundary condition at the probe's sidewalls and apex. The obtained estimation has shown large improvements in optical efficiency for this type of near-field optical microscope relative to usual near-field optical microscopes having a metal coated probe with a small hole for producing a small light spot. The near-field optical microscope having an optical probe as above and a solid immersion lens is proposed for operations in the reflective mode.
