Abstract

Using three butyl chloride isomers as test compounds, it is shown that the shape of polar molecules determines in a significant manner the dielectric properties of their dilute solutions in non-polar solvents. Taking into account the anisotropy of both the shape and the polarizability of molecules allows one to reach a useful correlation of the apparent dipole moments determined from solutions and the value obtained in the gaseous phase.
