Abstract

Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is an area of mechanics that performs mechanical analysis on fracture surfaces using the linear elastic theory. Some fatigue fracture criteria factors, such as the stress intensity factor $$K$$ and the energy release rate $$G$$ , , are based on LEFM. The material is assumed to be isotropic in LEFM, and only linear elastic deformation is examined. Plastic deformation and anisotropic materials are not considered in LEFM. As a result, only small-scale yielding is allowed. The theory of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM) should be used for large-scale yielding [269].
