•Glomerular filtration rate represents the best overall assessment of kidney function. •Commonly used methods of estimating glomerular filtration rate are the Cockcroft-Gault equation, Modification of Diet in Renal Disease formula, and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration formula. •Glomerular filtration rate and creatinine clearance provide guidance for drug dosing and adjustment.
