Abstract

In this work a fault location estimation method has been proposed for line commutated converter (LCC) based bipolar high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines. The proposed method uses DC current signals from rectifier end of the line to estimate the location of fault. All the simulation and algorithm design work has been carried on MATLAB. Fault type classification (pole 1 to ground (P1G) and pole 2 to ground (P2G)) is the pre-requisite criteria for fault location estimation. The proposed method is tested with various fault cases and error in location has been calculated. The results of the proposed method are promising.
