Abstract

1. 1. The volume of the extracellular space in isolated rabbit detrusor muscle was studied using [ 14C]-labelled mannitol, sucrose, inulin and dextran. 2. 2. Mannitol and sucrose reached equilibration after 1–2 hr at a volume of about 60 ml/100 g. Inulin and light-dextran reached equilibration after about 2 hr at a volume of about 43 ml/100 g. The uptake of heavy-dextran was extremely slow, a space of 43 ml/100 g. being occupied after 4 hr. 3. 3. The efflux of mannitol, sucrose and inulin was incomplete after 6 hr and was multicompartmental in nature. 4. 4. It appeared that mannitol and sucrose penetrated intracellularly and that, of the markers studied, inulin was the best marker to use for the estimation of the extracellular space in this tissue.
