Abstract

Energy generation from municipal solid waste plays a significant role in reducing the negative impacts on environmental sustainability. The objective of this study is to estimate energy generation from municipal solid waste (MSW) in the Jabodetabek (covering Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi) metropolitan areas, Indonesia. In this study, historical data on municipal waste is obtained from the Regional Environmental Agency and Ministry of Environment and Forestry. This study uses the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) model to estimate energy generation from MSW for the years 2020-2030. Based on the IPCC analysis, the Jabodetabek metropolitan area can potentially provide energy from MSW of 820.90 GWh of electricity in 2020 and 1,054.92 GWh of electricity by the year 2030. These results represent valuable information to improve the establishment of an integrated waste management system through policy and technology interventions in the Jabodetabek metropolitan area.
