Abstract

Abstract The problem of estimation of a parameter of interest θ is considered under Pitman Nearness (PN) Criterion and Pitman nearest estimator obtained in a class of estimators. The results are in particular applied to estimation of mean and variance of univariate populations and some of the situations where customary estimators can be improved, in PN-sence, are identified. Further it is found, unlike under MSE-criterion, that in a number of situations the use of auxiliary information does not result into the improvement of customary estimators of mean and variance of a variate under PN-criterion.
