Abstract

Introduction The aim of the study was to measure the energy cost in rhythmic gymnastic. Methods Twelve elite rhythmic gymnasts belonging to the national French team participated in this study. Maximal oxygen uptake and lactate concentration were measured in laboratory following a maximal test, after the four implements (rope, clubs, hoop and ball) and after a training session. Results and discussion Maximal V . O 2 values were ranged between 37.95 and 45.77 ml min –1 kg –1 and 25.12 ml min –1 kg –1 for training. The lactate concentrations were significantly higher ( P < 0.05) for exercises including hoop, rope, clubs compared to those measured in laboratory P < 0.05). There was no correlation between oxygen uptake and blood lactate concentrations and the performance level of each gymnast. Rhythmic gymnastic was caracterised as an anaerobic sport.
