In this study, we investigate an approach to estimate uncertainty in surface NMR water content and relaxation times utilizing resampling statistics. We use forward modeled synthetic data under various noise levels to demonstrate that a bootstrap resampling of the synthetic data reproduces an uncertainty estimate that closely reconstructs the “known uncertainty.” We also show example field data measured under different magnitude noise levels illustrating the result of our analysis under noise conditions that may be typically encountered in the field. The bootstrapping approach for estimating uncertainty is a computationally expensive brute-force strategy, but it is straightforward to implement and produces valuable uncertainty estimates for both water content and T2* relaxation time results for smooth surface NMR sounding models.
