Abstract

The implication of per-span polarization dependent loss (PDL) on the statistical behaviour of the bit-wise achievable information rate (BW-AIR) is investigated for probabilistically shaped and uniform 32 Gbaud, dual-polarization 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation. For constellation entropies ranging from 5.6 to 6 bits/symbol, and the number of spans ranging from 4 to 24, a simulation model that accurately captures the effect of PDL on both the signal and amplified spontaneous emission noise is used to characterize the statistical properties of the BW-AIR. Fitted probability density functions are employed to evaluate an outage probability based on a specified value of the normalized, generalized mutual information. A sensitivity metric is used to quantify a trade-off between the BW-AIR and resilience to PDL for cases of practical interest.
