Abstract

Using Gryzinski's method it is possible to estimate the total average number of 'equivalent' single ion electron pairs produced by an electron of given initial energy colliding with gas molecules in zero field. This calculation was performed for argon production of multiply charged positive ions and of ionization by ejected electrons was included. The mean energy expended per ion pair formed was found to be independent of electron energy for values >50 eV. The calculated value for argon was found to be larger than that obtained experimentally.
