Abstract

Length of the fully extended proboscis and length of the entire wing are closely correlated in 4 species of bumblebees found in the northeastern U.S.A. [ Bombus fervidus (F.), B. ternarius Say, B. terricola Kirby, B. vagans Smith]. Wing length of live, though inactive, specimens can be measured accurately. Thus, it is possible to obtain accurate estimates of proboscis length, an important determinant of foraging behavior, in freeranging populations of bumblebees.
