Abstract

A total of 6055 women aged less than 50 years were interviewed from 51 clusters (a mean of 119 respondents per cluster). The total number of sisters recorded was 15 188 (a mean of 2.5 per respondent) yielding with adjustment for the respondents age group 5778 sister units at risk. The number of adult sisters who had died during pregnancy during the labour or in the six weeks thereafter was 346 (27% of the total number of adult sisters died). This yields a Global Life Obstetric risk of 5.99% which assuming a total fertility rate of 6.5 sq. can be converted in an estimated MMR of 946/100 000 live births (95% confidence interval 848-1044/100 000).
