Abstract

Driving is a complex task involving sharp sensory perception, visual acuity, hand limb coordination, and prompt motor reflexes. An ergonomic car design can significantly augment the focus and attention of driver and reduce driving errors. The present research aims at developing a mathematical model for estimating the ergonomic index or compatibility of a car. This involves identifying major ergonomic attributes, capturing Voice of Customer (VoC) from consumer survey to find attribute importance rating and grouping the attributes into factors. This is followed by classifying each attribute into subcategories, calculating attribute score, factor score and finally applying Fuzzy Inference system to get the ergonomic index of a car. This research provides a novel method for uniquely determining the ergonomic index that can be used by the automobile designers and manufacturers for improving car ergonomics and by prospective buyers for selecting a car by using this index as a benchmark for comparison.
