Abstract

The promotion and marketing of contraceptive products are justified primarily by the understanding that they offer a substantial health benefit by reducing the risk of unwanted pregnancy. For many contraceptive methods, this benefit is not in doubt. Condoms and sterilization, for example, are highly reliable in blocking the passage of gametes though the male or female genital tract, and most hormonal contraceptives inhibit ovulation. Since pregnancy cannot occur unless a sperm meets an egg, then as long as these methods are actually used, they preclude pregnancy.
