Abstract

Experimental data were collected which give direct evidence that 15N‐labeled nitrate added to lake water can be converted to molecular nitrogen during anoxic periods. The rate of denitrification measured by the 15N method agrees with the rate calculated from the disappearance of nitrate. The end product of denitrification in lakes appears to be N2. There was no evidence of N2O or NO production.
