Abstract

Changes in salinity and temperature profiles through the center of a Mediterranean salt lens over a year are used to estimate vertical salt-finger fluxes. These flux estimates are an order of magnitude smaller than fluxes using laboratory flux laws, but are consistent with fluxes using Kunze's (1987, Journal of Marine Research, 45, 533–556) model for thick interfaces and Stern's (1976, Journal of Marine Research, 34, 95–110) criterion.
