Abstract

From the theory of intermolecular forces it follows that the interaction potential between F, Cl, Br, or I and an inert-gas atom is 1.5, 1.4, 1.2, or 1.2 times deeper than the potential between Ne, Ar, Kr, or Xe and the same inter-gas atom, respectively. This result should be taken into consideration in the theory of the rate of recombination of halogen atoms in the presence of an inert gas.
