Abstract

We discuss the two-photon absorption rate of helium excited with synchrotron light in the vacuum ultra-violet domain. A numerical estimate is made, based on the measured third-harmonic generation rate. It is found that, for typical experimental conditions with synchrotron radiation, the rate is very large for vacuum ultra-violet Free Electron Lasers currently under construction, but rather small for the existing undulator sources.
