Abstract
Abstract – By analyzing the imagery promoted by the Estado Novo through its ideological propaganda activities, previous scholarship has highlighted over time the regime’s alleged intention of breaking free from convention and turn to innovation, rather actually staging cultural policies based on traditionalist principles. In the present study I will therefore try to clarify the tensions underlying these apparently oxymoronic cultural constructions, by focusing on the analysis of popular cultural forms and their involvement in the construction of the national imagery.
