Abstract
The pain experienced during procedures like intrauterine device (IUD) insertion, is a function of both the level of pain experienced and the duration the pain is felt. Some interventions may diminish the level of pain but prolong the procedure. In these instances, whether a given intervention provides benefit to the patient is difficult to assess. Researchers often use a traditional visual analog scale (VAS) where a patient makes a mark along a line to indicate the level of pain they experience, but these measurements only provide a snapshot of the patient’s pain.
