Abstract

A unique aspect proposed by the theory of constraints (TOC) body of knowledge is in the process of creating flow. This approach is distinct from the current lean practices which focus on balancing of lines instead of adopting a system-driven approach. Both lean and TOC approaches have been put together after observing the Toyota production system, but each differs in the understanding and conceptualisation of the way it works. The TOC approach is far more specific on how to establish flow and improve flow in any manufacturing system and gives results much more quickly than other comparable methods. This paper tries to codify the principles of flow from the TOC approach.
