Abstract

Objective: Diagnostic algorithms and optimal treatment strategies for patients with facial paralysis following blunt temporal bone trauma are poorly defined. Indications for surgical decompression have largely been extrapolated from the literature on Bell’s palsy but the outcomes have not recently been rigorously evaluated. The objective of this study was to review the relevant literature on functional outcomes following observation versus surgical decompression of the facial nerve after temporal bone trauma. We also report on our institutional experience in the workup and treatment of these patients.
