Abstract

Patients undergoing surgery are typically not screened for alteration in skin integrity until they are in the operating room. These patients have a lengthy perioperative phase which puts them at an increased risk for altered skin integrity. CMS and other Third Party payors will no longer be reimbursing for care for hospital-acquired pressure ulcers. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the National Quality Forum recommend performing an admission skin assessment.
