Abstract

The radiation therapy department at the Vancouver Cancer Center, British Columbia, Canada, has introduced a Palliative Care Team (PCT). The PCT consists of a group of radiation therapists dedicated to the care of patients undergoing palliative radiation therapy. The PCT is responsible for the simulation, education, dose calculations, verification system data entry and treatment of each palliative patient. Participation in each step of a patient's treatment allows the PCT members to develop a familiarization with the patient while gaining specific knowledge regarding their circumstances. This has allowed greater continuity of care. The PCT has streamlined the treatment process reducing the length of time a patient is in the department. The PCT format requires fewer staff to operate making extra staff resources available elsewhere within the department. Staff have benefited from their involvement in the PCT by gaining knowledge and skills specific to palliative care. Opportunities for continuous professional development activities have further enabled PCT staff to evolve their expertise allowing a higher standard of care to be provided.
