Abstract

This chapter provides a firsthand account of creating a collegiate esports league from the vantage point of a conference level administrator. It describes competition frameworks, event sponsorship, and administrative considerations. This chapter also addresses some of the emerging legal issues of collegiate esports topics such as name, image and likeness (NIL), licensing, and gender equity and comparisons between college esports and traditional college sports. It also addresses the unique legal issues over the role of the video game industry in college esports and ends with the unique benefits and challenges to offering esports competition and raises concerns over the lack of governance in this generation of college esports.
