Abstract
A goal-directed orthodontic philosophy makes the treatment much more efficient and consistent. To achieve a pleasing result, the goals of treatment and mechanics listed bellow will be emphasized. The goals are: 1. Andrews' six keys to occlusion; 2. Roth's functional occlusion; 3. MBT treatment philosophy; 4. Best possible esthetics- position of the upper incisors; 5. Periodontal health. The systemic orthodontic treatment mechanics are determined by the four following elements: 1. Bracket selection; 2. Bracket positioning; 3. Arch wire selection; 4. Force levels. A balanced combination of these elements will achieve an efficient and systemized result. However, variation in any one of them can substantially undermine the treatment result. How to integrate orthodontics to a dentist's daily practice is an important issue today because more people are willing to accept brackets now. The family dentist will appreciate the essentials of efficiency in orthodontics if they follow the goals and practical mechanics discussed here. (J. Family Dent. 6(3): 4-16, 2011)
