Abstract

• There is evidence of a distinct upsurge of interest in the practice of general medicine. In the whole nation, 64 % of all physicians in private practice are either general practitioners or part-time specialists. To satisfy the increasing demand for advanced training in general practice, more and better residencies in this field must be offered. Such a residency should be a minimum of two years, must be equivalent in standards and prestige to a specialty residency, and must be primarily of educational value to the resident rather than a service to the hospital.
