Abstract

This book is an up-to-date, well-organised and comprehensive reference for urological laparoscopy. It covers a brief history and evolution of laparoscopy in urology and contains several chapters written by recognised international urologists. The language is simple and the book is easy to read. The book includes basic principles, instrumentation, set-up, a step-by-step guide to undertaking each procedure and post-operative care. Each chapter has key manoeuvres, key points and take-home messages in highlighted boxes. As laparoscopy becomes the norm for many urological procedures, this book will appeal to trainees, established urologists who are converting to laparoscopy and those who undertake this procedure on a regular basis. It may also be useful to anaesthetists and surgeons in other specialties performing laparoscopy. Several chapters take the reader through an entire laparoscopic procedure, from indications to positioning, published results from around the world and recognised complications. The accompanying DVD only focuses on two urological procedures. Although there are many good-quality illustrations and photographs, there could have been more to help the reader visualise the procedure being described. Other potentially useful omissions include a practical ‘tips and tricks’ section in each chapter and a final chapter on future developments. Overall, this is an authoritative and balanced book, which would be of use to any urologist, especially those with an interest in the field of laparoscopy.
