Abstract

A distinguished group of British and American surgeons have collaborated to produce a major new surgical textbook addressing the needs of surgical trainees. Three editors and 66 contributors have produced a volume of 79 chapters and 1,277 pages. The editors themselves ask about the need for yet another textbook of surgery. Their stated aim is to address the care of the surgical patient with multiple problems needing both medical and surgical treatment. They have included a large section on general management and begin each of the chapters on specific organs or anatomic regions with a careful presentation of anatomic and physiological principles. They have omitted details of operative technique, referring the reader to preceptors and surgical atlases, and have kept the bibliography and references brief.
