Abstract

This research has investigated extraction of essential oil from five species of Zingiberaceae in Meru Betiri National Park, i.e Zingiber officinale, Kaempferia galanga, Boesenbergia pandurata Roxb., Curcuma domestica, and Curcuma xanthorrhiza D. Dietr. Two extraction methods for obtaining essential oils were carried out by solvent extraction and steam distillation. The results show that majority of plants contain a similar content of essential oil compounds when it was extracted using both extraction methods. Only ginger species contains significantly different essential oil components if applied on both extraction methods. In addition, percent yield of essential oil extracts from most plant species were obtained in higher amount from solvent extraction method than from distillation method. Finally, all essential oil extracts were subjected to antimicrobial activity assays on Eschericia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella typhi, and Candida albicans.
