Abstract

ESR spectrum of the alkyl radicals trapped in irradiated polyethylene in urea-polyethylene complex was investigated and the effects of the heat treatments at various temperatures to the spectral parameters and the saturation behaviours of the ESR spectrum were studied. According to the variations of principal values of hyperfine tensor, it was concluded that an unstable site before heat treatment changed to a stable site by the treatment. Based on the data of saturation experiments, spur like trapping of the radicals was concluded. Similar investigations were also made for the bulk polyethylene and spur like trapping of the radicals was also concluded. The spur like trapping of the radicals was discussed in relation to the diffusion controlled scheme of the radical decay in the bulk polyethylene. The initial concentration of the radicals appearing in the kinetic equation of the decay reaction was found to be independent of the irradiation dose. This means that the spur like trapping of the radicals is confirmed in the study of the decay reaction of the radicals also.
