Abstract

The ESR spectrum of CuAc 2·2H 2O in acetic acid/water solutions has been studied in the glassy state at −186°C and in the liquid state over the temperature range 10–90°C. A reconstruction of the spectra with Lorentzian components reveals the importance of spin-rotational as well as anisotropic g and hyperfine tensor relaxation. It also indicates that probably the Van Vleck direct process together with the Orbach process, and possibly the Van Vleck-Raman process, are operative for spin-lattice relaxation. ]The data are compatible with an almost pure ionic monomer complex having anisotropic axial symmetric hyperfine and g tensors. g ∥ = 2.372 ± 0.004, g tT = 2.087 ± 0.008, A ∥ = -0.0137 ± 0.0002 cm −1, and | A ⊥| < 0.0008 cm −1.
