Abstract

Dioxygen complexes prepared in solution from high-spin cobalt(II) precursors have been investigated using electron spin resonance spectroscopy. These compounds differ from other adducts studied in this manner since they contain linear pentadentate Schiff base ligands. Comparisons are made with dioxygen complexes containing tetradentate ligands. Differences in the spectra of these compounds are attributed to differences in the mode of bonding and the arrangement of the ligand about the metal. Both spin polarization and delocalization are considered in the explanation of the spectra of cobalt-superoxo adducts.
