Abstract

Two types of paramagnetic defects in X-irradiated KClO 4 and KBrO 4 crystals, one of which was previously assigned to the species ClO 4 and BrO 4, are shown to have properties characteristic of weakly bound complexes of composition [XO 2,O 2] and [XO 2,2O 2], X = Cl, Br. The bond between XO 2 and O 2 is well represented in terms of an isotropic exchange interaction.
