Abstract

The present article proposes a methodology for estimating design values of sub-daily extreme rainfalls based on the Bayesian paradigm of statistical inference. The proposed methodology combines information from expectedly short samples of sub-daily rainfall extremes with information from longer samples of extreme daily rainfalls and with prior knowledge obtained from previous studies on extreme rainfalls in Portugal. The application of the procedure is exemplified with raingauge data at Abrantes. The obtained results validate the use of Bayesian techniques under scarcity of hydrologic information in future studies on extreme rainfalls with a short duration in Mainland Portugal.
