Abstract
Kolkata’s Line 2 metro is a major urban infrastructure project in India. Due for completion in 2022, it will connect the cities of Howrah and Kolkata by tunnelling through soft clayey subsoil under the Ganges and one of the world’s oldest and most congested urban areas. This paper describes the concept design of the new part of Esplanade station, one of the key interchanges on the project. It then explains how the configuration of the proposed four-level underground structure was optimised from a structural aspect, especially the depth and thickness of diaphragm walls.
