Abstract

This paper describes the design and implementation of an expert system for personal computer repair and maintenance (ESPCRM). Based on the Personal Consultant Plus 4.0 expert system shell, ESPCRM provides consultation for the repair and maintenance of the whole series of IBM/IBM compatible PCs from the XT to 486-based machines. Troubleshooting a personal computer (PC) is a knowledge-intensive task. Depending on the experience of the technician, a simple problem could take hours or even days to solve. An expert system offers a viable solution to the problem. Presently, the knowledge base of the expert system developed consists of some 94 rules, 68 parameters and 40 graphic pages. The acquisition of knowledge is conducted through interviews with technicians in the PC repair workshop catering for some 1200 PCs of various makes, models and configurations within the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
