Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the e ff ectiveness of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) through distance learning in a Japanese college. Twenty sophomore students majoring in Health and Nutrition participated in a semester-long English class. To evaluate the e ff ectiveness of ESP through distance learning, the data were obtained from students’ vocabulary size and questionnaire surveys. The results indicate that ESP through distance learning led students to study autonomously and had a positive impact on vocabulary size. Students’ self-assessment for reading and writing English has changed positively. There was a correlation between vocabulary size and self-assessment, and vocabulary size and frustration in learning English. Multiple regression analysis revealed that frustration in learning English is a significant factor to some extent for the estimation of vocabulary size.
